For many volleyball players, playing abroad is a big step. It gives you the opportunity to develop as a player at a higher level, discover new cultures and gain valuable experiences both on and off the court. At the same time, moving abroad also comes with its challenges.
From a sporting perspective, you will quickly notice that every league is different. The level, style of play and expectations can vary from country to country. Coaches and teams may have a different approach than you are used to, which helps you grow not only as a player, but also as a teammate.
A lot changes off the court as well. You find yourself in a new environment, often without your usual support around you. Language barriers, cultural differences and building a new social life can be challenging at first. At the same time, these experiences can make you more independent, confident and resilient.
Good preparation can make a big difference. Here are a few things to keep in mind:
- Make clear agreements: Think about your contract, accommodation, support and possible study or work opportunities. These are all things we at Joost Kooistra Sportmanagement will fully support you with. However, it is also important to think about what you need. The better we understand what you are looking for, the better we can advise you on which club and situation could be the right fit.
- Work on your visibility: A professional player profile and good video footage can help create the right opportunities. We will remind you from time to time when it is time to update your highlight videos. But if you have played a great match and think the footage would be valuable for your profile, feel free to send it to us as well. We can then add it to your portfolio and use it when presenting you to clubs.
- Prepare yourself mentally: Living and playing abroad requires an open mindset. Don’t be too hard on yourself and, especially during your first year abroad, give yourself time to settle in. Missing home or feeling uncertain from time to time is completely normal. And whenever you need to talk, share what is going on or ask for advice, we are here for that too.
- Keep investing in yourself: Continue developing both as an athlete and as a person, including during the off-season. Make sure you stay fit and prepare yourself for the season ahead. Clubs will often provide a summer program, such as a strength or conditioning plan. If they don’t and you are unsure how to structure your training yourself, we can look at how we can support you so you arrive fit and ready for pre-season.
- Learn about your club and competition: Once you know where you will be playing next season, take some time to find out what to expect. You can also get to know the level and style of the competition by watching matches online. For example, the national championship finals.
With the right preparation and support, playing abroad can become one of the most valuable experiences of your volleyball career.
And remember: you don’t have to figure everything out on your own. We are there to support you before, during and throughout your adventure abroad.
